Behavior has nothing to do with why dogs are not allowed. Crystal Cove State Park is home to many different wild animals including bobcats, coyotes, rabbits, and countless others. Our beloved canine friends are these animals predators so while we may see them as cute little fluffballs the animals who live in the park see them as ruthless predators. As far as dog friendly areas you can take them to any O.C. regional park and they are allowed on all beaches in Laguna until June 15.
There is a paved trail along the coastal bluffs where leashed dogs are allowed. Otherwise, you should check with the park rangers?
For protection of the wildlife that live in the cove.
We understand many people want to recreate in the outdoors with their dogs, so we do allow leashed dogs on the paved multi-use trail along the bluffs (great ocean views!). Dogs are prohibited from backcountry trails and the beaches for the following reasons….. 1) To Protect Park Resources: Dogs are predators by nature, and their presence or lingering scent will disturb and frighten wildlife nearby. Dogs can transmit diseases and other parasites to native animals. Dogs that run loose or become lost often harass or kill park wildlife. 2) For the Safety & Enjoyment of Others: Some people are intimidated by dogs, even friendly ones. Dogs reduce the amount of wildlife that hikers are likely to see. Also, dog waste along trails and the beach is a major nuisance to encounter and may contaminate the local water supply. 3) To Prevent Problems for you and your dog: Dogs in wild areas can be bitten by rattlesnakes, or other wildlife they happen to startle. Dogs can pick up ticks and poison oak.
There are also a ton of rattlesnakes that are frequently seen right off the trails..so keep your eyes out even when your dog is on leash
Rules are rules. For one thing, the mountain lions are more likely to tangle with a dog than a person.
