If you want to receive a "Real ID". You will need your birthday certificate, SS card and two documents with you name and address. If you want to renew your current California ID card. Then no Birth certificate is needed. The "Real ID" is required if you're going fly. TSA will ask for it NEXT YEAR.
Not for your current state only if you go to another one.
