It hasn't been destroyed, it was abandoned as a prison many years ago because of the running costs. A couple of the buildings have suffered fires meaning only the shells now exist. The main prison block is still very much good order and open for tours.
The buildings were in bad shape after years of rough conditions including the weather. It was too expensive to maintain, so it was closed.
