About 4.5 miles one way from the Observatory, I then cut down further into the park and found the original Batcave, worth checking out if you can.

It is exactly zero miles because the Hollywood sign is INSIDE of Griffith Park. The Griffith Observatory is NOT Griffith Park - it is also inside Griffith Park. All of these other people are giving you incorrect answers. The hike can be five minutes or five hours depending on where you start and how close you want to get. If you want a long hike with awesome views start at Travel Town and go up the road that leads past the old (now closed) landfill. If you want to hike two hours or less start at the Griffith Observatory but don't take the trail behind the Observatory. Park at the Observatory then walk north down Mt Hollywood drive which splits three ways. First to the left going back down, then upward leading toward the old landfill then to the right through a tunnel. Take the middle road till you find the trail on the left side of the road. Exact longitude/latitude: 34° 8'9.20 °N 118° 18'21.44 °W If you want a five minute hike drive ALL the way up Beachwood to the very end.
