The San Onofre Bluffs campground is usually booked solid from April-October, you go to their website and check availability through a company that handles camping reservations. If it's an extended stay try to plan 6 months in advance, conversely if it's a one night stand you may find a open spot here and there especially on weekdays. Again if you don't mind being on the east side of Hwy 5, the San Mateo campground is slightly less frequented. Out of state people should be paying double!
