Yes SDHS is a good place
You can go straight to your local shelter with your dog and let them know that you need to relinquish your dog. They will ask for as much information about the dog as possible.
This is where rescue dogs come from! I adopted my beagle mix at 5 years old from the Humane Society, Oceanside. He was traumatized from his previous owner but after 6 months he was much better! He's now 15 + and we've had quite a nice life together!
Just go to the shelter and say you need to give up ownership aka relinquish you're dog
