Is the road to Cataloochee elk area still closed? And has anyone seen elk at Sugarland recently?

We were at Oconaluftee Visitors Center near the end of September, and the elk were in the fields all day. I asked the park ranger why they were there all day when I had heard that they were only there in the early morning or at dusk. She said that during mating season (occuring while we were there), the elk are there all day. We saw about 30 elk in the fields and didn't over an hour watching them. It was quite a sight to see!

Didn't see any elk,no deer and no bears. We were there for 7 days cabin in pigeon forge, spent all of our time in the park, hiking, playing in the river, couldn't prove to us that these animals are there...lol

We saw tons of elk this past Sunday but we didn't go into cades cove so we didn't see any bear.
