No that is not correct. I just went through this process. First you must go to ssa.gov and print out a social security form, then fill it out. Then you have to call their local office and schedule an appointment. They will NOT accept you without an appointment .
You walk on their and go through the line, you will have to provide the proper documents. But considering the White House fraud these days really how valid is your social security number!
