My sims card was faulty after a month or so. Perhaps the same thing with you. I would go to the Verizon Store and let them look at it. They might even pro-rate your bill so you won't be late.
Along with calling to pay yr bill ask for support and they can help.
I would turn my phone off, let it reset for a minute or so, turn it On again and perhaps that might do the trick or I would definitely call Verizon, pay that darn bill over the phone ...
