Normally no, if you are going to run the bottles through the machine the bar code needs to be readable and that would be most convenient for you. Bottles rejected can be taken to the counter where an attendent will either give you credit for or reject them. Usually takes a while depending on how many and the line length.
If it's too damaged the machines won't take them, but they can be hand counted up to $5 as long as the barcode can be seen
