Do we have to make a reservation? can we do first one first serve? Do you think its worth the risk or should we call ahead?

It's a very popular campground. It gets filled up very quickly, I got a first come first serve site on my third try. I would definitely recommend getting a reservation

Reserved mine days ago on Recreation.gov. Got a beautiful spot by the lake.

These sites are reserved. You can do so on the Washington State website. The campgrounds are private but close enough together that two can be used for one family comfortably. The bathrooms are clean and the scenery is amazing! An hour to the west is a small town for eateries and shops. Along the way you can find plenty of campfire wood for sale. Bear boxes are available on the house at each site!
