No reservations are necessary, but keep in mind when you are traveling. Also check out the wsdot app or webpage and check out the cameras and wait times. If the wait time is more than 90 minutes, just drive around, people forget that their is a bridge on the north end of island and its a very scenic drive. Plus perfect time for road snacks and adventure.(just my 2cents)
You don't have to have one, but it makes it easier. However, whether you do or don't, arrive at least 45 minutes before the scheduled departure, if not more. They're very strict regarding their schedule.

You need reservations for the Coupville ferry (aka Keystone ferry) on central Whidbey. The Clinton/Mukilteo ferry is on the south end and reservations aren't available. Peak hours have long lines.
