You carry on a small suitcase as long as it can fit on a seat or in the storage over your head. You can put the suitcase down under too and open it to get want you need on the greyhound Terminal Station stops or when you trade buses.
On my last ride i did. The small travel bag has to be able to fit in the overhead compartment. I kept the backpack on my lap.
