If you have a library card, you might be able to check out a museum pass. Cant remember if MOHAI is included in that.

Its free the first thursday of each month for general entry into the main exhibits, but the special exhibits still cost money to get into.
Most museums (not all) are free the first Thursday of the month. Also, the museums that are free generally do not allow access to the special or visiting exhibits without paying.
