I'm so sorry to learn about the problem you've experienced. Having driven cross-country multiple times (also without a credit card), I have encountered the same and similar problems. IMO, it is appalling how difficult it is for even middle class folk to travel. And, I agree wholeheartedly with your point... The travel and booking sites absolutely should be providing this information to their customers.
No security. My pickup and many others were burglarized the manager of the property offered a discount next stay.
Yeah it's just in case someone messes something up in the room, they can be charged the extra amount. Pretty much assume that for future reference. I'm sorry you had to learn that way. There should have been a thing that told you.
