Lots of beach
There's plenty of beach to walk, but no hiking
Well, if you like to hike on the beach, then you're in luck. Go west, you have the okaloosa county pier, and urbanized motels, hotels and aquarium, continuing a few more miles before you get to Eglin AFB reservation, which continues some 30 miles to Navarre beach. Go east, a few hundred yards, again you'll find yourself on Eglin AFB reservation, for about 7 miles until the Destin pass and bridge. You can go on the beach part on Eglin AFB reservation provided you go to the web page for using day use government lands, register, take a test, easy common sense stuff, and print it out for your records, its free. Then you can go sunning, surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, shelling, walking and fishing (as long as you have the proper licenses) all you want. Just don't go back over the dunes or exploring any of the buildings, equipment or radar sites and you'll be fine. Sometimes these areas may be closed due to active military drills or exercises, but usually no more than a few hours.
