I would like to take my 9 year old son backpacking, camping and maybe a little rock climbing when it gets warm. I have heard that you can backpack and camp on the side of the trail, is this true or are there designated trails for backpacking/camping?

There are miles and miles of trail and landscapes for backpacking and cycling. As for the camping, i believe the trails are closed after dark but there are paid designated camping sites. I would Call in advance just to be sure, but it is a beautiful place and you will have a fantastic time!

Falling waters is right over the hill... Always worth driving out to see it... You can camp at the designated areas on the bike trail... There is an area east few miles out on the left toward confluence.

I agree, I do believe that the trails are closed after Dusk, Ohiopyle is a fantastic little town to stay in.

Yes. There is a building there that has all the info you need.

You can also raft or kayak down river from Confluence, that is an amazing trip too.
