Yup... you have to reserve. We reserved in January for August and they were filling up fast. Sorry about that. They have nice day use areas on the east side that are much less crowded than the north beach. And there's campground a ways away from there that are nice. You could check those out.
Usually you have to reserve 6 months in advance. Place fills fast and has always been at full capacity when we stay here.
