Yes, some airlines like Alaskan have stand alone kiosks, others like Southwest make you stand in line anyways to get to a self service kiosk.

I flew Southwest and when I checked in the day before on my computer they sent me an electronic boarding pass via email so I just had to show it on my phone and they scanned it so no paper was needed at Denver. My return was from Spokane and I had to check in at counter and they printed my boarding pass. I am not a regular flyer but I hope this helps a bit. Good luck and safe travels!
