Gaylord state forest in Michigan has remarkable color in the fall.
M22 in harbor springs is a good drive to look at colors it known as the tunnel of trees never been to Wisconsin
I would say if can get to the upper peninsula and drive Route 2 West if you're coming from lower Michigan you will have a very Scenic Drive nice curved roads plenty of Fall Foliage and you will run across a few bald eagles on the way. Every year I do a trip either by motorcycle or truck and it's always a spectacular view. and ride. You can also go up toward Sue Saint Marie that's another beautiful right just not as long. This also depends on where you're coming from if you're in Michigan or if you are coming from another state such as Wisconsin or Illinois. Hope that helps you.
Huron National forrest.
The when will be heavily dependant on the type of summer and Autumn each state has. If the cold weather comes in fast, the colors will show up earlier, perhaps late August in the U P and Northern Wisconsin. Sometimes the colors are still enjoyable through early November. Both states and Northern Canada are gorgeous in the fall. Look up Agawa Canyon train tours. That is a great way to see beautiful color.
