I have to be search each time because of artificial knees...the TSA folks are always nice and offer private screening. Treat them nice and they will be nice.
You cannot completely avoid getting searched. You can opt out of going through the scanner. Instead, you can request to be searched by a TSA officer through a pat-down; in private, if desired.
