Real IDs can be renewed online but you can't first time cannot. You have to apply online and finish it at the DMV. You can however reapply for your license online but you MUST apply for a Real ID by 2021
You dont need to do a written test to renew. If you got a notice you can do it online unless you need to update it to REAL ID. but that can be uploaded online too!
