I’m taking the Southwest Chief to Chicago and my return trip will be on the Lakeshore Limited. I’m wondering if there is anywhere to hang out during the long layovers. I have Coach tickets and I’m disabled. Do I have to buy lounge pass?

There is no business class on long hauls. Both those train are 1st & coach only. Yes. You would have to buy the upgrade to the lounge.

If you are able to ugrade to business class the Metropolitan lounge is included. Its very comfortable, nice people. Redcap service will take you to/from the train. The bus class car itself is cleaner and quieter with more space overall.It may be worth the extra money to you, I wish I had invested in the option on prior trips.
