A 4 wheeler is recommended if you go to Monahans Sand Dunes... That would be fun
We rode motorcycles and to be honest very disappointed...all the sites to visit you had to pay to be guided. Now the pit houses were free but the big sites u had to pay extra to see. I won't go back.
Having visited this park extensively, I recommend not traveling on 4 wheeler. The sites are about 20 miles from the entrance, and the sites are all down walking trails, many with ladders. After searching the NPS website, I find no mention of or reason to have a quad in the park. Parking is right at all the sites and attractions. There are great areas near Mesa Verde to ride, such as the Echo Basin/Transfer trail area above Mancos. I hope you have a great visit, and remember to go to the Anasazi Heritage Center (separate from the park) for the younger kids to enjoy.
You can drive it on designated areas. There is a part of the Wetherhill Mesa that you will have to park and the rest of the way is by foot only. The other mesa you are able to stop off on the side of the road at the different sites a bit better.
