It's a good place for a walk through nature. Sometimes it's crowded so prepared not to be alone. Facilities, bathrooms and drinking fountains, are closed or don't work so bring water. It needs work but a good place to escape the urban life throughout DC and the burbs.

Roosevelt island is amazing. You access it from the mt Vernon trail in VA by crossing a pedestrian bridge. There is a large parking lot off the gw parkway to access the bridge - or you can bike/walk/run there. There are various trails around the perimeter of the island, just a bit over a mile around. The north side of the island has a half-mile long boardwalk. There are various entry points to the center attraction, which is a very large statue of Theodore Roosevelt and several large pools that used to have water in them, but haven't for years. Honestly, the trails around the perimeter are the best part of the island. There are bathrooms off the main trail to the right after you get off the bridge. During the summer, you can see turtles sunbathing on logs under the area where the bridge meets the island. There are geckos all along the island. You can see ducks and herons at some of the offshoots of the boardwalk. During the fall, you can sometimes see deer on the south side of the island. You can also often watch the rowing teams from many points on the island.

Excellent for a family walk, the swamp trail is stroller friendly. You need to take right after entering from the foot over bridge for the stroller friendly side. (Left side trail is not stroller friendly). Alternatively you can walk up to the Teddy Roosevelt statue in the middle of the island if you are not in the mood for walking. Free parking which is mostly available. Love Teddy Roosevelt!! The monument in the middle of this island is an awesome tribute one of America's often celebrated but still under appreciated presidents. The park/monument is maintained as it should be, but it's still well worth the visit. He was one of our best. There's a water fountain by the bridge leading onto the island, and a bathroom on the island but I think they removed all the water points on the island so if it's hot, top off you water before you cross the bridge.

Pretty cool place in the middle of two very busy, fast moving cities. This is an awesome place to get your mind off things and be in nature for a while. My only complaint is that there were many fountains in the main memorial areas that were totally dry, and I was very sad to see them empty with no water.

Are there picnic table for family gathering there?

Parking i.e. tailgate along GW Parkway, where allowed in lots, but I don't know of any there either. July 4 when packed, likely people bringing lawn chairs, etc. Be fore warned, fences go up along the Parkway, and wall to wall er. Edge to edge?, bumper to bumper crowded. No drinking liquor in the parks, iirc
