Really cool!! I went to the south side first. The visitors center there is much more sophisticated and there are many rangers to help you out. There are many trails into the canyon from the south side, but you need a permit and if recommend either getting to the park when it opens or maybe even right before to be first in line. Getting to the south side can be a pain if you travel in on US50 because of construction. I also went to the north rim. I attempted the S.O.B. Draw trail and wow it’s tough. I was the only person hiking on that side of the canyon, with no rangers present at all. Make sure you follow all the rules! I’d say that just like the Grand Canyon, the South Rim (at the Canyon of the Gunnison NP) has more opportunity than the North Rim. Both are worth visiting though!

Beautiful and highly underrated national park. Recommend getting there early as it heats up quickly during the summertime. If you’re looking for a challenge stop by the visitor center and get a permit to hike down into the canyon

This national park may not be as popular as others but it is worth a trip to see. It has many overlook areas with great views with short walking distances. We only toured the south rim, can not speak for the north rim.

I had to pick my jaw up off the dirt road -- the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is just INCREDIBLE!! Standing on the edge of the South Rim and marveling at the staggering cliffs and ancient rock faces was humbling. We went in October and the Aspens were changing, enhancing the already breathtaking beauty. It took two millennia for the Gunnison River to carve out this majestic canyon and you don’t miss it!

From the North rim to the South rim is about 2 hours.
If you have never been, go to the south rim. The north rim is pretty amazing too, and the hiking and camping is better(more private, quiter) but the veiws arent as good. There considerably fewer camp sites on the north rim and they are not reservable, so get there early. One thing i think a lot of people skip is the drive to the bottom on the south rim. If you have a smaller vehicle (not a rv) it is a pretty fun drive and a completely different veiw of the canyon.
Should be. You'll want to go back.
South Rim is open. North Rim and East Portal will probably stay closed until late April.

It is a look out with historical background. There is hiking, camping and a lot more. Best suggestion would be to checkout the web site. Beautiful area nicknamed the little grand canyon. Great experience.
Black canyon national park has several nice on trail hikes. Hiking to the bottom is off trail and requires a permit.
You are limited where you can take them on a leash due to aggressive deer. See NPS website below. https://www.nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/pets2.htm
In addition to the visitor center, being able to stand in the canyon and look up is awe inspiring. I believe we left the park and drove a bit in order to do this.
