New management took over and things have gone downhill, the office is locked most of the time (and the amenities are randomly locked at odd hours) and they don’t respond to maintenance requests with any urgency

If you have no issues with drilling noise, dust, plumbing, water cuts, and maintenance through half of your stay, you're welcome here. The apartments are old and they'll do all the maintenance work while you stay.

I have lived here since November 2014, when I shared a 2 bed, 2 bath. Rent was about $1700. Now, I live in a 1 bedroom, which also now costs me $1700. I understand that rental prices rise, but I also feel like the company should reward long-term renters with no issues by NOT trying to price them out. What kills me about what I pay, however, is the low quality of construction and finishes I had in both apartments (they weren't the "upgraded" ones), but ESPECIALLY my current 1 bed. Even the day I moved into my 1 bedroom, the carpet has been hastily patched and stained, waves and bunches on the floor, and is constantly falling apart. The unit smelled like cigarette smoke, and the smell still lingers 2 years later in the washer/dryer closet, and in my carpet. The walls were painted a much dingier color than the 2 bedroom. There's a big patch of plaster and drywall missing in the bathroom that they never fixed. My bathroom fan doesn't do anything about steam when I shower. My bathroom sinks were chipped, then painted to hide it, but the paint is coming off. My kitchen faucet has had to be fixed literally 5-6 times, because it either starts spraying water everywhere when i turn it on, or it won't turn on, or it won't control the temp of the water. I've literally begged for a new one, but they just keep fixing it. My stove top has *maybe* 2 working burners, and the others have been spotty non-stop, despite them replacing the burners. My kitchen and bath linoleum was super beat up. As for the floor noise, it's... I suppose you kind of get used to it after awhile. But it's awful. I have lived beneath people who tried to put in a home gym above my bedroom. The current tenants above have children, and it's constant running, jumping, slamming, and yelling above me, and it's all so loud. The things on my walls shake. The floor creaks with any movement. I can also hear every sound they make shutting cupboards in their kitchen, which overlaps my bedroom. It's such poor design, and building quality. That all being said, the units mostly have nice large windows. I like the layout of the apartments, the wood-burning fireplace, and the convenience of washer/dryer in unit, and storage off the balcony. I much prefer living in a setting with all of the landscaping Montebello has, rather than just a big building. I wish they would keep up with it a bit more, and maybe replace some of the 14 trees removed this winter. Most of the staff is pretty friendly, and same with the maintenance team. They're pretty responsive, even though that response might be tepid. Recently had a water incident in my unit, and there was tons of water in the carpet. I had to ask the maintenance guy to shop-vac the water out. Then it was a long tube stretching across my kitchen into the drain, and 24 hours later, they removed the dehumidifier, which all feels incredibly underwhelming considering the water dripped through to the unit below. I brought up my concern about mold and was promptly shut down. I still live here, and I'm highly interested in continuing to live here. It's a great location and I love being surrounded by the trees. I just wish I got what I pay for.

As a former and recent resident of the Montebello Apartments, I strongly suggest finding a different option. In addition to paper thin walls and floors making you privy to your neighbors' every movement, the customer/resident care is poor. In the month before our family was to consider renewing our lease, the property management had work being done to a neighboring unit resulting in a pipe bursting and flooding the walls in our unit and rendering our main access point/large extended hallway of the home unusable. After reporting the damage in our unit, the property managers chose to drill holes randomly throughout the hallway and set out used, dirty buckets to collect the dripping water, adding an industrial size dehumidifier in the middle of our dining area with tubing sloppily strewn across our living room and into our kitchen. This cobbled fix came with no instructions or best care practices for dealing with this obstacle and large equipment running non-stop in our unit. After pressing the issue on my own, I was finally able to get the property managers to send a 3rd party inspector into our unit because we had fear of mold and other contaminants released by the flooding they caused. The inspector determined that the unit was uninhabitable, thus forcing our family of 4 out of our unit. We made our own accommodations to temporarily stay elsewhere when initially given a 3 - 5 day estimate for the work to be done. That 3 - 5 days turned into 3 weeks, with minimal communication from the property group throughout the process, deflections from the corporate office to direct my concerns to the on-site manager that happened to be on vacation in the middle of this fiasco, and our family not knowing the status of our unit (for which we had already paid for the month in which we were forced out) and whether or not it would be safe to reenter in a reasonable amount of time. Needless to say, we sought and found a different/new home, really out of uncertainty with Montebello and the realization that the customer/resident care there was substandard once we were faced with such an issue. It ranks as one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had, prompting this review - an action I've never bothered to take with any other business ever. The kicker in the whole thing is that Montebello issued us a bill for rent, sewage/utilities, when were physically not even present on their property. Unbelievable! If you are considering living here and value, respect, courtesy, accountability and have an expectation when paying premium rental prices that you will be treated with the utmost care, please, by all means, run the other direction!
