I am my Grammie caregiver and she has been living at southgate for 18 years!! Nothing but amazing things to say about this place. We have very little issues over 18 years but if we do the issue is fixed quickly with the front office staff being regularly available and the maintenances man always on site. Beautiful rooms, great community room. Everything available to the people who live their is cleaned regularly. They have fun little things to do to keep the folks that live here busy!!! Over all great place and so glad we picked it for my Grammie.

I've visited family living in Southgate Apts - it's a lovely and affordable apartment community. It's nicely decorated and beautifully maintained. It has proper security - the front door is locked and residents buzz their guests in. Parking spots are close to the front door and the apartments are close to shops - a supermarket and pharmacy - and a gas station is just across the street - and a Lutheran church is a short walk away. It's understandable that there is a long waiting list for these apartments.

I filled out a 17 page application in 2019 and was told a 2 year wait. I have called numerous times and no one ever returned my phone calls! I have been looking for low income senior apartments for over 15 years and there does not seem to be any decent places to live. I am very discouraged with Berks Housing Authority! Most of the places I checked out were dumps and thought Southgate Apartments would be a nice place. But whoever is in charge is not very forthcoming!

It depends on availability...someone has to move out before a unit becomes available. Some people have waited up to a year; some have only waited a few months. I'm not aware of any current openings. And contrary to the rating, I have had nothing but good experiences living here.

You need to fill out an application to be put on the waiting list, and there are some in the vestibule. To submit the application, you'll then need to meet with the property manager who's usually here on Mondays and Fridays.
Eligibility is based on your income, and you must be >62 yrs old. I am in a 1bdrm and my rent just increased to $610 for 2020. I waited about 6 months for an available apt but the wait is based on a current resident moving out or dying. I CAN say the wait is worth it because it's the best and quietest place at which I've lived. Tonia Kiene is the property manager and is very helpful and nice to deal with. Applications are in the property's vestibule.
My 1 bdrm is about 800sqft. Large kitchen and bedroom. Living room comfortably hold 2 loveseat sofas, 52" TV, and a computer desk.
