Very nice hike for being so close to town. We hike here often when we don't have time to travel outside of Phoenix. There are a few different hikes most are easy to moderate.

In the Phoenix Mountain Preserve you can do several fantastic hikes. With a friend, this time I did the Dixie Mountain Loop - a 5 mile hike that took us 3 1/2 hrs (according to the map 2 1/2). However, we made several stops to take pictures of the great landscape (see pictures) and of course to drink enough water/electrolytes. There are some fantastic hikes in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. This time I did the Dixie Mountain tour with a colleague - for the 8.2 km we needed 3 1/2 hours (2 1/2 are given). We made several stops to take pictures of the impressive landscape and to drink enough.

It's free and there's plenty of parking.
Park outside gate ,it only adds a short additional walk so you can't get locked in.But note the rules say you can't stay after the designated time
Yes if on a leash, and there is a fine if you don't pick up your dogs poop.
There are several good spots just short walk from the Apache Wash Trailhead, which has plenty of parking and nice restrooms. It's especially pretty at sunset, when you can photograph the saguaros silhouetted against the setting sun.
No, the preserve has a huge trail system that is heavily trafficked by hikers, bikers, and equestrians
Nope, it is a walking/hiking trail
No I don't think this is a good place to picnic. It is very hot and sunny, and I only saw one area to sit which is by the restrooms and a very small area with little to no shade. Also agree with previous comments regarding snake advisory. There have been numerous reports of vast amounts of snakes which have resulted in park closings this year. Be careful!
From I17 Exit 219, Go East on Jomax to your 1st Left, Norterra Dr. Follow to N Valley Pkwy; turn Right. Take 1st Left onto W Copperhead Trl, Left again on W Malvern, then Right onto W Desert Vista Trl. Trailhead is at end of the Road: 1901 W Desert Vista Trl
Yes
Exhale bike shop @ bell and I17 AoA off 101 and bell
Yes. The trails are marked and rated according to bikers ability. SEE the large map in the parking area near the restrooms to choose the best trail for you. I recommend taking a photo of the map so you are able to refer to it while on your journey. ENJOY the nice views.
