One of the most beautiful passes along the Inyo Wilderness and Sierra Nevada. Be sure to hike to the top, at 12000 feet the views are stunning. Plan for at least a full day, up and down and to enjoy the vistas. Fair amount of mountain hiking experience recommend. Sierra shuttle is a great way to get to and from the trailhead from Bishop (bus station on Warren Street).

βοΈ I never expected the first snow to fall. π₯Ύ I gave up hiking because I wasn't ready. π§₯𧣠My wife was very cold. π¨ After October, you must prepare thick clothes for climbing.

I hiked from here to long lake. That was easy trail and took 2 hours and a half. If you have 3 more hours, you can go to bishop pass where we gave up to go because of lightning ahead!

Great hikes. Bishop pass/long lake hike is much easier than the treasure lakes hike which shares the same trailhead and splits off about half a mile in. Itβs an additional 2.2 miles to treasure lakes (1st lake) on a harder to follow and steep trail. Again, long lake to the left is much easier.

Southlake, Sabrina, Northlake and the Outlet have very easy access. Camping is available at all four spots. The Outlet has the closest camping sites. At Northlake the camping sites is small but it's in my opinion the best. There's a very small stream running next to the campground. The said stream has nice fish in it. With Southlake and Sabrina you'll find the camping spots on the road up to the Lakes. There is a trail from Southlake to Sabrina if you're into hiking but be forewarned, be prepared. Bring plenty of water and be prepared for anything. If you are an experienced hiker you will know what you need. But if you are not experienced or you are a novice, and this goes for any hiking, check with an expert. I am not one. But I'm smart enough to realize that you have to be....PREPARED. My example is this: it's a lot easier to grab a snack ( Apple, granola bar, carrots or ?) halfway choose a hike then to have a grumbling stomach or a complaining child for the rest of the hike... KM
Not sure what distance you are referring to specifically, but this trailhead at South Lake is located about 30 mins drive on pavement from Bishop, CA. Several hours of summer condition hiking (note: this is currently buried under multiple feet of snow) from this trailhead will put you close to the switchbacks at the base of Bishop Pass.
