If you don’t want to climb up on the roof yourself, do this. Assuming a normal composition shingle roof, find a time when you can look from the ground with the sun on the other side of the roof. Look for vertical white lines at the edges of the shingles. The white lines are caused by the loss of the protective granules exposing the reflective substrate beneath. If you have those, the roof is nearing retirement age. If the lines extend into white patches, it’s getting closer.
While deciding which roofer could qualify as YOUR roofer, there are a few things to look at. First of all, i would SERIOUSLY avoid asking a realtor. Realtors can be a great resource, and they can also be the worst sense of direction in the world. Realtors build a working relationship with the contractor that is willing to do the work at the cheapest rate, not the highest quality. Also, DO NOT hire a handy man. Nothing against the jack-of-all trades type of guys, but they are rarely (maybe 1 out of 50) qualified to touch your roof.
If your roof is in a state of disrepair and it has deteriorated over time, it is important to at least consider having it you roof replaced. There are quite a few benefits associated with replacing your roof, and you will want to take a look at some of them before making a final decision of any kind. * The first benefit is safety – As your roof gets older it starts to deteriorate and it loses its ability to protect the interior of your home from the elements. Not only is your home exposed to water damage, you are at risk to mold growth in areas of your home that you can’t see, like the inside your walls or in the attic space. * The second benefit is a Manufacture Warranty – A manufacture warranty only becomes a benefit if you hire a Certified Contractor, one that is authorized to offer a long term warranty by the materials manufacture. Depending on which manufacture made the roofing materials, your roof replacement may come with a warranty that covers materials and labor,
The type of roof to be prescribed in a building completely depends upon the surroundings and climate. In a place, where there is heavy rainfall, pitched roofs are preffered. Pitched roofs are commonly known as the sloping roofs. They help the rain water to shed out of the building.
By asking your contractor the right questions, you can determine his reliability, reputation, and experience, and his dedication to delivering a project to your satisfaction.
Even the best contractor can’t do a satisfactory job with inferior materials. It’s essential to combine proper specifications, materials, and application with quality craftsmanship. However… the average homeowner doesn’t know what proper specifications, materials, and craftsmanship mean — until it is too late.
Prepare a plastic roof cover if you can't get in the attic and have no way of determining the exact location of the leak. Use a 4-foot roll of 6-mil polyethylene plastic. Unroll the plastic but don't unfold it. Measure enough to cover a section of the roof from the eave to the ridge, add an extra 4 feet, and cut it from the roll with a utility knife. Unfold the plastic just one fold to make a strip 8 feet wide. Roll one end of the plastic around an 8-foot two-by-four and staple the plastic to the wood. Cut another 8-foot two-by-four and nail it to the first, with the plastic sandwiched between the two pieces of wood. Go on the roof and place the wood along the eaves. Stretch the plastic over the ridge, covering the approximate location of the leak. Staple the other end to another two-by-four and nail a fourth two-by-four to that one. Allow that pair of two-by-fours to hang down on the opposite side of the ridge.
A roof inspection will be best. A hail damaged roof with have pock marks where large hail has bruised the membrane and caused the chips to come loose. It takes a sizable piece of hail to damage a good roof. 1 inch diameter or larger in most cases. The roof inspector will look at and count the number of these pock marks in a 5 x 5 or 10 x 10 area or whatever standard is used.
1. Visual identification of debris on the roof deck. 2. Missing shingles. 3. Cracked shingles. 4. A large pile of granules at the end of your downspout; a small amount is normal, especially for new shingles.
Homeowners insurance may help cover certain causes of storm damage, including wind, hail and lightning. However, damage caused by flood and earthquakes typically is not covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy. It's important to read your policy to learn what types of storm damage may or may not be covered.
1. Missing or Damaged Shingles. This is the most obvious sign. ... 2. Damaged Flashings. Flashings are the thin strips that you'll find on your roofing's most vulnerable parts, such as the valleys and hips. ... 3. Granules in the Gutters. Finally, check if there's an unusually large amount of granules in the gutters.
Unfortunately, roof leaks causing the running water on the walls is difficult to identify. Sometimes, roofs in these sections do not discolor. However, if you see rustic wall stains, it is a sign the wall is near a leak. Quick emergency roof leak repair will reduce wall moisture damage.
Homeowners have a lot of options when looking to replace their roof. The most basic question is whether they want asphalt shingles or concrete tiles. These are the two most popular options for residential roofing, and the odds are good that the roof that’s being replaced is made of one or the other. Each material has advantages and disadvantages, so consider carefully which one will better suit your home. Shingles are cheaper If you are looking for the cheaper option, shingles are the choice for you. The initial cost of both materials and labor is lower. Asphalt shingles run at a little more than half the cost of a concrete tile roof installation, on average. If you’re on a tight budget shingles are almost certainly the way to go. Concrete tile conducts less heat If you live in a hot climate, you might consider concrete tiles instead. Concrete tiles allow less heat to transfer into the house and can help to lower your high energy bills.
On average, a typical 2,000 square feet tile roof will cost between $25,000 and $45,000 to install, depending on the profile, roof difficulty, choice of material, and location. Note: higher-end clay tiles can cost significantly more than low-end and mid-range tiles.
Roofs are one of the most important structural components of any building. Whether you are constructing a residential space or a warehouse, you need to be particular about the roofing material you choose to ensure the safety of your building. While there is no dearth of different types of roofing materials, metal roofing sheets have become the material of choice for leading architects and builders today.
Slate roofing tile has a long and storied history, and is generally known as one of the highest quality, longest lasting roofing materials on the market. On the other hand, the high cost, difficult installation, and relative fragility of slate roofing tile means it’s not ideal for everybody. Benefits of slate roofing are mentioned below : Longevity Durability Fireproof Waterproof Requires no maintenance Resists climatic/seasonal change Impervious to fungus and mold Visually appealing Environment-friendly Cost-effective
