Joan was fantastic in settling a dispute over my security deposit with a former landlord. She answered all my questions and took care of all communication for me. Once we settled I was paid promptly. I'd definitely recommend her.

LANDLORDS BEWARE! SHE IS A SCAM. She wrote up this rather terribly written 9 page demands referencing RLTO's. About 90% of this was made up by our tenants, who by the way are criminals. Also she allows her clients to not pay their rent. Which is hypocritical considering she makes these crazy demands on us landlords but doesnt hold her clients accountable. She attempted to force us to pay out over 20k in "damages" essentially making it where the tenants would be able to live in my property for free. Long story short, ALWAYS give your tenants the RLTO summary, but even more importantly, be aware of the "Exclusions". We assumed we were included, so we provided the Ordinance, however, after further investigation, my property was not actually included. Lastly, she attempts to scare you into not evicting the tenants by threatening to sue, and place sanctions on your lawyer.Better not phone Joan, she might get you (the tenant) in more trouble than anything. Due to her lovely demands, we are now able to remove all of our owned electronics from the home as well. (:

Joan Fenstermaker is an absolute God-send! My fiance and I needed to relocate from Chicago in a short period of time, and we reached out to Joan in the hopes of reaching an agreement to break our lease. The property management company we were renting from was going through some transitions - unbeknownst to us, but Joan navigated our entire relationship with the company to help us reach a favorable solution. She was extremely accommodating with her time, made the effort to make sure we understood every angle of the situation, and made a point of providing us all we needed to make informed decisions throughout the process of reaching agreement. Joan knows her stuff and knows how to get stuff done. I can't adamantly enough express how appreciative we are for her, but - if you're in the market for a tenant lawyer - look no further; you've found her.

Yes, but we only represent tenants related to rental property located within the City of Chicago. Currently, we are not taking eviction cases.
I'm sorry, but no. Meetings are by appointment only. We are available for Zoom or phone meetings however.

I’m afraid that I don’t know any tenant lawyers in DuPage. You might want to call the DuPage County Bar Association and ask for a referral.
I went through an issue with my landlord regarding condition and code violation. Joan helped me tremendously. She (in my specific case) advised me not to take this action. Although this reduced value in rent based on usability of your rental is legal. It could come with unforeseen consequences. Your landlord could start an eviction process. You could go to court and stop the eviction. By then your credit would be affected from the reporting of the eviction. Call Joan she will give you options that will be straight forward and protect you against your landlord.
No, I’m afraid not. We only represent tenants residing within the City of Chicago.
It says on Joan's website that her office does not handle evictions.
