Awesome view of the beautiful colored desert from the first and second Lookout areas. Didn't go in further.

We covered both the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest in one day. The experience was wonderful with great scenery and impressive petroglyphs. We walked on the Blue Forest trail. This was spectacular as it looked up from the bottom of the canyon.

We are spoiled. Living in West Texas, we have stunning landscapes in both Caprock Canyons and Palo Duro State Parks that rival Painted Desert. They are called The Spanish Skirts. However, if you are on I-40 and starting at Painted Desert, don’t stop; keep going south into Petrified Forest NP. In our opinion, much more engaging and worth exploring. To our thinking, that’s your 5-star national park experience

A very scenic series of outlook parking areas, all inside the Petrified Forest Park. Beautiful views, it was cloudy and the colors didn't come out well.

We were there yesterday and they make sure everyone is out by 5pm ish. There is no overnight camping in the park right now. They didn't give a time for when they would be opening it back up for overnight camping. The closest thing to overnight free camping is at the entrance off the Route 180. You enter the park in Route 66 and exit to the 180. There are plenty of free spaces to camp if you have a camper, RV or are sleeping in your car. They don't allow tent camping (although it didn't seem like anyone was coming around anytime soon to check). No amenities, no bathroom, no dump, no electrical, no water hookups. Gift shop (with bathrooms) was closed when we went by it at 5:15pm and we aren't sure if it was closed for covid or not. Best of luck. It's beautiful and we loved the park. The best trail was the crystal forest to see all the petrified wood.
20 dollars per vehicle- however painted desert is jyst the land region that stretches across Arizona, as well as into parts of Utah and new Mexico . The petrified forest national park is what the 20 dollar fee is actually for. But you will see the painted desert all throughout the park!
They open at 8am. Light would be lower and more colorful at that time. I don't remember when they close, but evening light would be great too. Cooler in the morning.
No, I don't think so.
