What was once a classy, desired banquet hall is now a run down, unkempt disappointment. Decor is old and out of date, very dingy. The parking lot is unkempt and covered in a green overgrowth that makes it look like a tennis ball. The food was HORRIBLE. A buffet line where you are not allowed to serve yourself? My friend had to practically beg for 2 extra meatballs from the server! The meatballs were obvious frozen, all perfectly round. Preshaped and precooked dumped in canned overly salty gravy. The breaded chicken was also frozen, pressed and formed prebreaded patties overly warmed through and dry as hell. The pasta was overcooked with jarred marinara. No effort was made to cover up the fact it was jarred. A few extra spices and a touch of sugar to cut the acidity would have helped immensely. The most edible things were the potatoes, frozen chunked and oven browned with no seasoning or butter, the frozen veggie medley, the tossed salad with the boring italian or ranch dressing choices, and the rolls, which they didn't even attempt to warm up or hide the fact they were pre baked and bagged. I remember the glory days of Athena, when I attended weddings and showers there on a regular basis. It used to be a classy, beautiful hall with excellent in house cooked food and service. Even the restrooms were pitiful. While they were clean, they are in dire need of updating. They still have tiny, close to the floor toilets, even in the handicapped stall. As a handicapped person, even though there were handrails, I had a hell of a time getting up off the toilet! Building codes are more updated now with taller toilets being more handicapped accessible are the status quo. This place is in need of a new owner who gives a damn, who cares how the place looks and operates, who is willing to update and get out of its 1970's-1980's time warp, a cook who doesn't take the lazy way out, who cares about quality, taste and presentation, a staff that while friendly, who care about their jobs and provide more than mediocre service. If changes are not made. I would not be at all surprised to see Athena close for good. It's a shame because it's in a great location and had a decent reputation at one time. But now, no one seems to care.
