I went through a nightmare of a kafkaesque process to get my property back, spanning more than 500 days and endless overlapping requests for documentation. The Office´s core values are apparently Fair, Accurate, Innovative, Responsive -- and they failed miserable at the latter three. Perhaps they get to keep assets which are not returned?, I struggle to see how it is possible to treat clients so poorly unless they really try to.

Im from Australia and I have never dealt with a more unhelpful government department in all of my life. My husband was awarded shares in the company he worked for and stupidly didnt cash them in thinking he would do this at a later date. Long story short , he tried to get the money back but it had passed to this woeful department. He ended up dying from Cancer and despite trying to get the money back, didnt get the money back. So I have tried for over 12 month and I still cant get the money back despite sending in every document they have asked for , death certificate, marriage certificate, copy of title deed of our house, copy of his will etc and I still havent gotten the lousy money back. They are just disgusting to deal with. If I could give them ZERO stars I would.

They have their own rules. For example, if an EIN number has been applied for, IRS states you may write "applied for" but now they want my social security card.
