The volunteers that habitat gets are individuals or corporate groups that sign up to work with them through a portal on their website, and they just sign up for a day's work. They also only work on homes for the home buyer applicants who have have submitted an application to their home buying program. At this point (at least for Chicago hfh) they actually only do new home construction as well, they don't have any renovation projects as of yet. However, all of that said, I think they will occasionally host block improvement events in Chicago in which certain Representatives for certain neighbourhoods can apply for assistance in their block beatification. The Restore does take cabinets in good condition and they will pick stuff up, but you will need to have it ready for them outside or in a garage. But it may differ depending on which location you're going to. You'd be able to find out more on the habitat affiliate website.
