How often should I clean my gutters?

Gutters should be cleaned at least once in the summer and twice in the fall.

What type of gutters should I get?

Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021

We recommend seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts. Aluminum, because they are thick enough to be durable in the event of being hit by tree branches. Seamless gutters is the keyword here, seams often begin to leak over time. With a seamless gutter manufactured on site with our gutter truck, you’ll get continuous runs of gutter so that there won’t be glued or caulked seams in the middle.

When should I replace my gutters?

Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021

If you have steel or vinyl gutters, you will need to replace them eventually. You should replace your gutters at the first signs of rust. Rust will often show up as little orange speckles that show through the paint, rusty colored stains at the end of the downspouts, or at gutter seams that are separated and leaking. Gutters rust from the inside out. When they begin to show rusting on the outside, the inside is rusting through. Often, however, because of standing water, the gutter may need to be repaired in just one or two areas.

Why do I need gutters?

Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021
Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021

Clogged or leaky gutters are one of the biggest causes of basement leaks, mold and other foundation problems. Standing water in gutters is one of the common places mosquitos breed; leaky gutters can cause damage to a house’s structural integrity by allowing water to damage the fascia, soffit, or wood framing of the house; many homeowners have experienced damaged landscaping caused by gutter problems; excess water flowing into the ground near the house can erode the dirt directly beneath driveways, patios, and walkways. As the dirt is washed away, the driveway, patio, or walkway is no longer fully supported and can settle, crack, or even collapse. If you have already experienced this type of damage, fix the gutter system or downspout problem before replacing or repairing the driveway, patio, or walkway.

What are the life spans of different roofing materials?

Generally, real wood will wear out the fastest, followed by three-tab asphalt shingles. You can maybe get 15-20 years out of each of these; which for most home owners is great. Most building owners, roofing contractors and designers feel 20 years is an acceptable service life. Some metal roofs can last up to 50 years, depending on their warranty. Synthetic roofing tiles last up to 50 years and require minimal maintenance attention. Real slate also lasts many years on a home … some slate can last up to 100 years!

What are my options if I decide to reroof?

Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021
Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021

You have two basic options: You can choose a complete replacement of the roof system, involving a tear-off of your existing roof system, or re-cover the existing roof system, involving only the installation of a new roof system. If you’ve already had one re-cover installed on your original roof system, check with us to see if you can re-cover your roof or if you will need to do a complete replacement. In many instances, building code requirements allow no more than one roof system re-cover before a complete replacement is necessary.

What type of roof do I put on my house?

Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021
Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021

Putting a roof on your home is not only an important financial decision, but it has an important aesthetic value for your home too. When you drive up to your home, you want to say to yourself “that’s a nice looking roof.” Jenesis Roofing offers a wide selection of high quality products, each having attributes and faults. The key to selecting the proper roof system is identifying the specific roof design parameters of your building, and how each roof system meets those parameters. The Roofing Experts at Jenesis Roofing can help you determine which product is best for you.

Can I do the work myself?

Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021
Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021

Most work should not be done yourself. Professional roofing contractors, such as our Roofing Experts at Jenesis, are trained to safely and efficiently repair or replace roof systems. You can damage your roof system by using improper roofing techniques and severely injure yourself by falling off or through the roof. Maintenance performed by home and building owners should be confined to inspecting roof systems during the fall and spring to check for cracked or curling shingles and cleaning gutters filled with dead leaves and other debris. If you must inspect your roof system yourself, use a firmly braced or tied-off ladder equipped with rubber safety feet. Wear rubber-soled shoes and stay on the ladder (and off the roof system), if possible.

When should I replace my roof or does my roof need to be replaced?

Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021
Jenesis Roofing | Oct 13, 2021

This can vary depending on the type of roof. Shake roofs: Most roofs start telling you they need to be replaced when the shakes start to crumble under your feet or when you start finding them in your yard after a windstorm. Composition Shingles: These usually wear out in a more discreet way. Granules start coming off leaving black patches showing. Shingles also start to curl at the ends. In General, some people think if a roof leaks they need to replace it. Unless it’s an older roof, leaks can usually be repaired. With leaking in older roofs and/or if your roof has leaking in more than a few areas, this can mean trouble. Indoors, look for cracked paint, discolored plasterboard and peeling wallpaper as signs of damaged roof areas.
