The Union provides access to various services and offers access to good networking opportunities however keep in mind joining it is not a garauntee for getting work as it's not an agency. The Union does have a musicians referral service though that pulls from its members when productions request 802 performers. Ultimately the Union is about using musicians' collective power to insure fair wages and fair treatment in the workforce. I'd suggest your brother join if those are the ideals he wants respected for his work.
See info below (it's quarterly dues are lowest if joining during the 4th quarter): Initiation Fees In order to join Local 802, there is a one-time Initiation Fee of $100 plus a prorated Membership Dues payment. $65 dollars of the Initiation Fee is forwarded to the American Federation of Musicians and the remaining $35, plus the prorated Membership Dues, remains with Local 802. Quarterly dues are prorated in the following manner: If a member joins in the 1st month of a quarter, dues for the remainder of the quarter are $55.00 If a member joins in the 2nd month of a quarter, dues for the remainder of the quarter are $36.50 If a member joins in the 3rd month of a quarter, dues for the remainder of the quarter are $19.00
