It's such a ripe off. They charge you $7 to drive in, $5 per adult to swim, then you continue to get taxed along the way.

After several severe thunderstorms rolled in on night one we were worried about getting rained out for the whole 4 day trip but the weather broke and Smith Mountain Lake proved itself as one of the best places in VA to "car camp". The camp sites are quite close together (almost too close) but we had our privacy because most of the camp sites left after the big storm. Great place to fish but the boat traffic during the day is intense. If you kayak, especially when fishing, definitely hit the water early morning and evening time if you want to experience the blissful peace that comes with calm waters and beautiful scenery.

First time here. I like it. The beach is clean. The water is wonderful and the beach is bigger than I thought I’d be. Lifeguards on duty which is nice and a little place you can rent kayaks. $7 to get in the park and then on weekends $4 a person. Weekdays are $3 a person. Not too bad. Highly recommend!

I saw a family with a dog.
At SML State Park Beach, there's a food stand serving mini pizzas, nachos, hotdogs and ice cream ... There are restaurants around SML but you'll have to leave the state park. They're 20 to 50 minutes away.
You can't fish at the state park beach: it's a public beach, in which you pay to get in. You can fish other places on the lake, plus there is boating. It's not the ocean, so, yes, it's fresh water.

Yes Picknic area open but beach area is still closed....you can rent a boat or you can grab your own and enjoy your boat ride or Kayak....
7.00 to park all day and 3.00 per adult at swimming area.
Typically closes after Labor Day.
