Once you find where to start, the trails are very well marked and maintained. But there are no street or highway signs directing you to the park so we had to drive around quite a bit to find a trail head.

Not immediately in the area but black hall outfitters isn't terribly far away and would probably be your best bet.

I kayaked to the north side of the island and found the beach just inside the inlet. Are there any other beaches or docking opportunities around the island?

For kayaks yes there are 4 camping sites and small beaches

Is the current of the Connecticut river difficult to paddle in?

I want to paddle out to Selden, where is a good, public launch point?

Depends on how far you want to paddle? A fairly close launch would be at the Hadlyme ferry at the base of Gillette Castle. There is a launch site on the right side of the parking lot when facing the river.
