Yes, it may be possible depending on your job duties.

Am I entitled to severance pay?

Ottinger Employment Lawyers | Oct 2, 2018

Severance pay is not required by law, but many companies still offer it to ensure smooth transitions. Companies want to prevent disruptions to their business so they often offer to pay departing employees a few weeks or months of pay in exchange for the employee's promise to cooperate and go away quietly without filing suit. Higher level people tend to get larger severance packages. People who are fired for cause or misconduct typically do not get severance pay.

What are my rights at work?

Ottinger Employment Lawyers | Oct 2, 2018
Ottinger Employment Lawyers | Oct 2, 2018

Most all employees are "employees at will." As an employee at will, you can quit your job anytime and for any reason and without notice. Likewise, your employer is free to fire you at anytime and for any reason and without notice. However, all employees are protected by anti-discrimination and sexual harassment laws. This means that a person cannot be fired, demoted or otherwise mistreated due to their race, gender, religion, disability, age etc. Also, employees have the right to work without being sexually harassed. In addition, state and federal laws regulate the payment of wages. Employees have the right to be paid the minimum wage (varies by state and city) and many employees have the right to overtime pay. Some states, like California, give certain workers the right to take meal and rest breaks. Your rights as an employee vary based on where you work and they type of work you do.

We focus on helping executives and employees who work for corporations. Unfortunately we don't handle many cases involving government entities such as townships, cities, states etc. Give us call and we will see if we can help. If we can't handle the case, we will help you find a lawyer who represents government employees.
