I learned this is one of the most densely populated area’s in the USA for Black Bear. We saw three. Worth the drive.

Amazing place to see wildlife, got to see a small Alligator, bears and birds, didn't see any wolves. There are absolutely going to be biting flies so bring bug spray or cover up

Umm... Yes?? There are Black Bears than live in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. I can't give you an exact count or location, is that's what you are asking, especially not for a future date.

I have a Senior "Meetup" kayak group in South Carolina called SC Fun Seniors. Can anyone tell me if the Alligator River is a river that is a good river to kayak on. We would prefer a moving flatwater river of at least 10 miles in length. Ty for info.

I would not advise anyone new to kayaking to go on Alligator. The river is brackish water and the waves can get several feet high on a windy day. The river itself is also several miles wide at empties directly into the sound.

Any mammals we can see such as opossums, armadillos, deer, or foxes? I know we can see bears.

George Vasilescu | Sep 30, 2020
Chrissy Claypool | Sep 30, 2020

Yes to everything but armadillos. I don't believe that we have them in NC. I did start seeing some in near Charleston SC though. Go early in the morning or at dusk to see everything. Not much activity during the day fir sightings.

We visited the Refuge the week of May 14 , and were lucky enough to see 19 Bear. I noticed almost to the Bear they do not have the lighter colored muzzle. Are they a sub-species of the North American Black Bear??? Is there a explanation?

Barbara Konieczny | Oct 1, 2018
Vernon McCormick | Oct 1, 2018

Saw a film at black bear festival in Plymouth NC in early June and they spoke of a separate growing group. Not sure about lighter color muzzle, maybe part of difference in group.
