Camping in Wharton State Park

Row row row your boat, gently down the Batsto~~ The water is nice, good cover from the sun, and scenery is interesting. Also not very crowded.

Nothing like the Pine Barrens have been going through these Woods since I've been a child So for 50 years always something to do and people to meet and Beauty to see

Yes stick to existing roads. Lots of damage caused by illegal off- roading but there are plenty of legal roads to enjoy. Use your judgment.
Not sure if its totally legal but there are many many 4x4 trucks that go through there
Rt.539 long road can't miss it
Best down by the old rail bridge over 72.
Not in the park but there are rental places in the area
Buttonwood Hill Camping Area, lined with a scarce amount of primitive campsites, ringed with fire pits. Located across Cowleys Landing Boat Launch on 542 down the road from Basto.
Tour permit? I can't just take a walk in the woods?
Yes just put in Goshen pond in your gps and it will take you in past the camp and then there are hundreds of trails to hit from there
20 dollars a night plus a 5 dollar fee
Yes
I had lots of fun with a bike
The Ranger Station at Atsion, it's on rt 206
There are designated camping areas in Wharton. Check in with the rangers when you arrive. If they are on patrol and you are randomly camped in the woods you will be awakened and that will likely be the most pleasant part of the experience.
I know there is camping, but what I would do is to is to contact the rangers office or check out their website for more information. They have a link just for camping on the main page on the left side. https://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/wharton.html
TL;DR, not in areas with other bathers. Most trails are open to your dog being on a leash. Dogs aren't really allowed on camp grounds or on the beach of the Atsion Rec Area, stuff like that. So no swimming with other bathers. Again you can hike with them about everywhere. If you're asking about the trails out there... I doubt park police care, but that needs to be taken with a grain of salt, since I don't actually know. Mostly the police don't want anyone getting hurt, or making a mess of the park. New Jersey is really weird about being "allowed" to swim in ponds or in rivers without a lifeguard on duty. For example, you can kayak down the Mullica freely without supervision, all the way to Atlantic City, etc., but park police will probably get on you for swimming somewhere without proper supervision or a PFD or something if they catch you... also snapper turtles and beaver are a thing out there. So be careful. Be safe. Leave no trace.
Yes the lower end is best in my opinion
Unfortunately no. Most places need to be paid for. Sorry
No, it’s just a forest with trails.
Yes just be aware of your surroundings there are other vehicles on the roads and horses enjoy your ride
Yes, registered and plated vehicles. You should stay on roads they are trying to rehabilitate sensitive areas destroyed.
Rutgers
I don't think so, nothing motorized except car/truck. But double check with rangers at Batsto.
It wont be half as good as a place like Arizona but its pretty good for New Jersey theres as little light pollution as your gonna get in New Jersey
I got there at 11 at night and found my way to my campsite fine
No
All terrain vehicles are prohibited in wharton. Recommend looking on NJ parks and forest website for any state parks that do allow them
I have camped there for well over 20 years and never one to see. However the Rangers will tell you yes there are, so prepare like they are there.
Sorry couldn't tell you I've never been there
Sorry can't help as I've never been there have you tried calling them directly? Or looking it up someplace else on the internet
So basically you can't ride a motocross bike? Just a enduro?
I'm sure u can
Im sure you can
I rented my kayaks from micks they have 2 to 5 hour trips all for the same price in chatsworth
I honestly don't remember there being specific campsites. Pretty sure it was sleep wherever but dont block a trail! Haha!
Yes
No, if you cant drive it on the road legally you can't drive it in the woods. All vehicles need insurance, registration, and plates. Endruos are the only type of bikes allowed.
Atsion is closer to Medford. And easy to get to the ranger station is deeper into the woods.
Just go and have fun stick to main tracks all legal
Only electric motors there're are some rope swings on the wading river. @ godfreys bridge. Stop at micks canoes they will guide you in the right direction. Good luck
If you take the red trail it’s pretty mild and loops back around to the parking lot. I recommend using another campsite
Yes, I suggest Goshen pond campsite, bass and trout are possible, but doubtful due to the beaver and herons. Catfish all day if you're so inclined. A nj fishing license is required, areas are patrolled so don't try it. Unless you plan on keeping trout, you won't need a trout stamp. And if your son is under 15 he won't need a fishing license. About $13 for a license and less than $15 for a camping permit. The camping permit can be purchased at the rangers office located at the intersection of Atsion Rd. And rt 206. So get out there.
No, technically it is not free. There are very cheap 'Fire permit/ camping permits to purchase at certain locations depending on where you plan on camping. Prices vary
Just go and have fun. Make sure your transportation vehicle and trailer are no where where the law can sit and wait for you. That is the only way you can get into trouble. They won't chase you thru the pines. If they do take off! Again if they find where you have to load up when leaving your caught.
No. But at the Millville Motorsports Park you could.
Thanks for the answers. Do any of you know a map coordinate of where they are?
Yes
You would have to rent privately from somewhere and bring to Wharton.
Most of the campgrounds do but not all of them.
Yes there are paths roads. N trails they have cabins and a lake to swim in we go there every year
Anything street legal is greenlighted. Must be registered insured and licensed.
You must remain on the named roads. From experience, I can tell you that one honest mistake, a wrong turn, can land you in the big house. Its pretty ugly....dont get stuck somewhere you don't belong.
Also roads marked on your maps app are also good to ride on, it's a good rule of thumb if you're unsure. They pop up on my phone only when zoomed in enough
No alcohol is allowed. You want to be sober in case you run into the jersey devil.
Yes, in areas not of historical value with a permit from the state Parks and Forestry Division.
The cutting of trees was to create a fire gap, helping to prevent forest fires from spreading.
It should have started by now so I expect in the next week or two with the colder air coming or way this week
You want to go right past the RV park and general store
Bel Haven Paddlesports
