It is a "must do". I lived near Madison for over 20 years before ever having the pleasure of using the ferry. It is a great time! Although I have never had a long wait, I would probably would get anxious about the time if I were in a hurry. I like to use it once a year. And of course, get your your ice cream on either side. I also did know at first that people can just walk on, so if you are the driver, just stay in your car while your friends/family get ice cream. They can just walk on and join you.

The ferry is one of the only free ferries left. I always cross once a year at least Kind of a tradition thing I've been doing since I was a kid.

Amazing that this is a free service! Cuts off a good chunk of travel time and was very convenient to use. Cute little setting to wait and grab an ice cream.

24/7. There are exceptions. Routine maintenance and fueling. Check for the flashing light on HWY 12 just past HWY K in the westbound lane. There is another light on HWY 78 between the HWY 113 and Merrimac. Last, the ferry closes for winter. Specifically when the main channel is frozen. Alternate routes around the lake include HWY 78, HWY 188, and HWY 60.
