Garbage experience. As an out of town tourist, we were unaware of how insanely long the wait is. The ferry ride itself is fine and the staff are pleasant enough but waiting 2+ hours on each side before even being able to board the ferry is insane and unless you think the island is enough interest to you (it wasn’t for us) it’s definitely not worth it.

Be advised that ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras is 1st come/1st on and NC plates and commercial vehicles get priority. Semi trucks take a lot of space. If you are out of state passenger or recreational vehicle, you get on if they can squeeze you in or there are no priority vehicles. On Weds 4/06/22, we waited 3.5 hrs in line before we were squished on at the tail end. Lucky for us that I drive a compact car. Staff was working hard and doing best they could under the circumstances. If you are on a timeline, this may not be best option for you.

We left from Cedar Island and had a great trip, it was a little shorter than expected and we were able to enjoy a pleasant ride. The bathrooms were clean and there were plenty of places to sit both inside and outside. We had made our reservation in advance and decided to go earlier than previously planned. We called the number to see about an earlier ferry and it was a quick and easy process. We found our longest ferry line between Ocracoke and Hatteras. We were three ferry waits in the line, but were the first car on the 3 boat and that had a great view. If you are in a hurry, the ferry might not be the best choice, you won't be able to control the time you are getting from place to place.
