Having not ridden a bicycle in over 25 years, it was with great trepidation that I agreed to the 4 mile cycle trip to the 4 mile long one way road through the most visited National preserve. Eight miles, how will I survive? The first time I made the journey was about 2:00 on a 93 degree afternoon. Not recommended! However, I ventured out again early the next day and it was so relaxing and peaceful! If I ever have to ride a bicycle again, this is were I would do it. Wide road with one way slow moving traffic as well as stopping places along the way to look for birds, well it doesn't get any better than that! Remember to stay hydrated! Yes, there are restrooms along the way.

Absolutely loved driving through J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The entrance fee paid for three days of visits. You may use your vehicle or pay for a tram ride with a guided tour. There are also hiking trails if you choose to walk, fishing is available, as well as kayaking along the water. I chose to drive and had an amazing time. I saw many different species of birds, three manatees, an iguana, crabs, jumping fish, and many more interesting views and finds. I went at low tide and saw many birds feeding and went in the evening just before closing. Both visits were exciting with great finds. Highly recommend!

We love visiting Ding Darling NWR! The volunteers are simply the best! There is so much information in the visitor’s center, you could spend all day reading and looking at things! The drive is great, with a lot of places to stop and wait to see wildlife.

Sanibel islands unique location and brackish waters allow for both crocodile and alligator according to our trolley guide Donald.
The Refuge is open and accessible. Every Friday the Wildlife Drive is closed for a couple of reasons but everything else is open. The Visitor and Education Center is open every day from 9-4. There are a few rangers back to work and the wonderful volunteers to help the refuge run. The Wildlife Society is also open and will be regardless of the government shutdown.
Leashed. But be aware that they are regarded as snacks by some local fauna.
Yes but you will be lucky if you see any
I think the trials would be fine for a mobility scooter. They were pretty flat and wide. Great place to visit. Especially for a outdoor enthusiasts.
Yes, we have a sea life and nature cruise that goes out several times a day, along with guided kayak tours through our trail..
The drive is always closed on Fridays to give a break to the animals. If you want an out door activity tarpon bay explorers is open for kayaking, boats and different tours. Worth checking out if youre wanting to do outside activities to see the wildlife tomorrow!
Sanibel in general is very dog friendly to well behaved, leashed dogs (And their owners who clean up after them). We haven’t encountered any issues with our two dogs going everywhere with us on the island.
The refuge is open, at least all activities that are taking place outside.
Yes, trail is open until sunset.
Sanibel low tide 651 pm.
You can also bike, walk or take the trolley. Or fish. If you are there as the tide goes out, you might spend an hour taking photos of all the birds catching breakfast.
Only closed on Fridays, so they are open
I have seen people walk dogs, I have no idea what the rules are however.
Yes.
Spillway?
Plan at least a couple hours if you want to walk, well worth it though!

Anytime, but you'll see the most birds very early or late in the day especially when it is within an hour of low tide which varies from day to day.
I think it is $5.00 to enter the Refuge and $6.00 to cross the causeway to the island.
Actually, Wildlife Drive is open on Christmas & New Years Day. BUT always closed on Fridays. However, the Visitor Center is closed. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/JN_Ding_Darling/plan_your_visit/hours.html
Yes closed on Friday's. Here is their web site. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/JN_Ding_Darling/plan_your_visit/hours.html
It is present on the coast. I would call the refuge directly at 239-472-1100 and ask about the conditions in the park. Enjoy your holiday!
Yes Red Tide that kills the fish. we have seen pictures of the beach clean up and wondered if it has affected the reserve?
States their hours and closures here. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/JN_Ding_Darling/plan_your_visit/hours.html
I did not see any raccoons while there. It is a place of great natural beauty, photo opportunities abound.
$6.00 per car for a day pass. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/JN_Ding_Darling/plan_your_visit/hours.html
Probably mullet. Not a flying fish but a frequent jumper.
You can rent bikes outside the center down the road, but they dont rent at the center.
Yes. I've done it. It is about 5 miles but you end up quite a little ways from the entrance.
Yes. Stop at the kiosk in parking lot or go in to visitors desk.

I do not believe motors are allowed in the Refuge.
Yes...he was. Naturalist and political cartoonist.
I was at Bowman Beach today, but I don't think that was it. When I crossed the toll booth the place I used to shell at was on the right not left. They had no restrooms or showers or anything, I just remember a.lot of steps going down to the beach.
