We were visiting Gatlinburg for a few nights and I really wanted to swim in a waterfall and go on a beautiful hike - this hike checked both boxes! Visiting these falls was the best part of my trip. Things to consider: The hike is not easy but for me it was a fun challenge. I did see kids on the trail that appeared to be as young as 6 or 7. Park right before you get to the gravel part of the road in the parking lot across from the travel center. We crossed the bridge across the river where my last picture was taken. This is a national park trail so no dogs are allowed. If you plan to swim in the waterfall bring water shoes! It's very rocky but so worth it!

Not too long of a trail but lots of tree roots and rocks to walk over. Worth the hike beautiful falls

Always love this Trail. The trail gives you plenty of extreme climbing with rocks and roots and hills. It's about a mile to Spruce Falls. Definitely worth it

Excellent trail, fairly easy hike and well worth the trip. A truly beautiful place.

I'm fairly certain that all the things in the park are free to the public. :)
Dogs are only allowed on two trails. Gatlinburg Trail and Oconaluftee River Trail.
It took us almost an hour to get to the falls and a little less than that to get back to the car. Bring hiking sticks, water, and pack a lunch for a nice day.
You can park at Smoky Mountain Institute and go above rec center and follow trail that says To Falls. One mile one way. This is a steep trail that is exposed so be careful long drops. To get near the falls requires some bouldering up and down rocks that can be slick. Please use caution with kids and inexperienced hiking/bouldering skills. The other way is to park in a designated pull off near the falls (not on gravel road) and ford the river then you have to boulder up a bunch of slick rocks to falls. Crossing the river can be dangerous because the underwater rocks are slick and a treacherous rapid is right down river. Please exercise extreme caution either way in my opinion
