You can also walk around. Lots and lots to see. There is always some sort of a show going on upstairs. Well worth going...

We did not need a ticket to see the old capitol on Sunday, but there were "lunch" hours so just check those

It was free when i went & there were costumed people to answer questions. They do have a donation box.
Construction began in 1868 took 20 years to complete. Illinois is was a free state at the time, and construction was not done by slave labor.
I know you can't go up the last set of stairs to go into the gallery balcony, and there are some roped off rooms you can only peer into. I would recommend a visit.
