This clinic made my journey to look into PREP an absolute NIGHTMARE. I was referred to the clinic by my primary care doctor, who knew little about Prep. When I made my initial appointment, I was not told that the clinic is "hospital-based", which means that they bill a portion of the visits as a physician's visit and a portion as a hospital/facility charge (which my insurance and many other insurance companies do NOT cover). I found myself saddled with hundreds of dollars in medical bills as a result of my attempt to look into Prep. I have been fighting with the hospital and Clinic 1k for MONTHS now to have this bill taken care of. Nancy Langman, the so-called Financial Counselor for the clinic, did not return my calls for over three weeks, even after I left numerous voicemails pleading for her help. I was finally able to catch her off-guard by calling every 15 minutes until she picked up her phone. Her lack of professionalism was appalling. I was actually told that "if the clinic had told you we were hospital based and YOU HAD ASKED WHAT THAT MEANT, we would have told you about the way we bill these services". So, it was my fault as an uninformed patient for not asking about how I might be billed for a service that I was told would be free by both my doctor (Justin Frye) and my social worker (Scotty Elliott). Apparently it was not the duty of the nurses, social workers or doctors I spoke to throughout this horrifying process to alert me to anything. Prep requires that you do follow-up appointments and lab work every 3 months - potentially costing me THOUSANDS of dollars. None of this information was offered to me. I was actually told "if you have friends that are getting Prep cheap or for free, you should probably go where they go". Those words are verbatim. And that would be lovely if that were how insurance works (I would give anything not to have to go back to this clinic) - but I was stuck with Duke for the time being. Nancy also mentioned that she has FIVE cases very similar to mine that she is working on as a result of this clinic's gross negligence and the hospital's failure to keep their patients informed. I am absolutely disgusted. It adds to the tragedy of the HIV pandemic that places like this are our only options to resort to for help and information. I am utterly at my wit's end, and sincerely hope that the folks at this clinic feel the deep sense of shame that they ought to for failing me and the community at large with their disaster of bureaucratic red tape masquerading as a public service. If you are looking into Prep and have ANY other option I urge you to look elsewhere for guidance, as the only thing you will get from the staff at Duke's Infectious Disease Clinic is large, unexpected, financially crippling medical debt with a side of blame and sass.

Do you have a specialist on staff who can knowledgeably treat mycobacaterium infection of long standing? Asheville Infectious Disease is apparently too understaffed to continue my treatment and I don't want to die yet from this neglect.

The best resource is the Duke Hospital website. There's a list of Specialist for this department there.
