A huge rec area with lots to do. We drove through and although the majority of the park burned in a wildfire, it was still beautiful and worth the drive.

This was a great place to visit. I went on the Shasta Divide Trail at the Visitor center, the Tower House Historical Area and the Whiskeytown Falls Trail. All of the areas were interesting and scenic.

Really nice place and the visitor center is easy to get to. Great hikes along the lake and we even saw some bears, so worth having a bear bell and spray if you are going hiking around here.

It is a little distance out from Redding. Peaceful, quiet and good views of the lake driving along the south shore road. There are kayak tours led by guides on certain days.

Is Whiskeytown Lake close to public

David Anthony | Apr 23, 2021
LL VG | Apr 24, 2021

Its a public area so it is not closed to the public, but its only maybe half an hour east of Redding, so it is relatively close to the public as well. I would say that a lot of hiking around here is closed except during the summers and some swimming areas might be closed during winters. You do need to purchase a day pass at the station on the southwest entrance.

Does they charge anything to enter in the park and can anyone swimm in the lake?

How is the trail, did the fire last year affected it?

jimmy Johnson | Apr 23, 2021
LL VG | Apr 24, 2021

Trails are generally susceptible to weather. Fires and snow storms will damage the trails and they usually take a long time to repair. Also waterfall trails are generally closed during winter and mountain trails are generally only ipen during summer, if at all.

The lake itself is open 24/7 but certain spots like the marina and the swimming areas and the visitor center, the last being where you purchase day or longer passes, open 10 am and close 4 pm as refered to by another reviewer answering your question.

Is it true that 4th grade students get a free year pass, and how do you get it?

Tonia Deptuch | Apr 23, 2021
LL VG | Apr 24, 2021

I have not heard about this. I know they used to sell lifetime passes for seniors but those have been removed if I'm not mistaken. Either that or they used to br free and now there is a charge on it. Or maybe even the passes were free to seniors for a year and now they aren't. What do I know lol. Sorry for this long comment not even being much of an answer.

Hi there, My Wife and I have a dog. Do you allow them and can we take our dog hiking and swimming?

Mitchell Farrell | Jan 19, 2019
Christina Piles | Jan 20, 2019

Yes to both. The trails usually have a lot of hikers, mountain bike riders and horses on them, so having your dogs leashed us a good idea.
